Fishing
Franklin harbour boasts spotted and silver whiting, snapper,
squid, mullet,
flathead, garfish, snook tommy ruff and blue crabs. The
protected waters
of the harbour provide a safe haven for boaties. If you don't
own a boat,
you might like to try your luck fishing from the recently
upgraded town
jetty.
Foreshore and Mangrove Boardwalk
In recent years the Cowell foreshore has seen considerable
redevelopment.
It boasts a well maintained grassed area and playground.
The boat launching facilities have been improved with the
deepening of
the channel.
The development of a mangrove boardwalk has enhanced this area
further.
You can take a stroll and observe the marine and birdlife Cowell
has to
offer.
Beaches
Lucky Bay is situated 16kms north of Cowell. A
safe swimming
beach for children.
Flat Rock Beach - 12 kms south of Cowell. Good
swimming
beach.
The Knob located 13kms south of Cowell. Good
swimming
beach
Port Gibbon located south of The Knob. Clean
wide beach.
Point Gibbon 5kms from Port Gibbon, 20kms south
of Cowell.
Access to beautiful sand dunes and if you are lucky, sealions.
Poverty Beach is located north of Arno Bay. A
good surfing
beach.
Cowell Jade
In 1965 a local farmer Harry Schiller found Nephrite
Jade in
the Minbrie Ranges. Cowell Jade is recognised as some of the
oldest and
best quality found in the world. Cowell Jade is on display and
can be purchased from the Post Office or Jade Motel.
Aquaculture
Oyster farming is an important industry in Cowell, with a large
number
of commercial leases in the Franklin Harbour. Fin fish are also
farmed
in the harbour. Turner
Aquaculture
conducts tours of its facilities and gives demonstrations on the
processes
involved in the farming of oysters and kingfish.
Franklin Harbour Historical Museum
This museum can be found in the main street of Cowell, in what
was the
old post office building. Items on display tell of the
developement of
the Franklin Habour area. The Museum is opened via prior
arrangement at
the council chambers.
Ruston Proctor Steam Tractor Museum
This museum is situated on the Lincoln Highway.
Arts and Crafts
There is a craft shop located in the main st. "June's Gallery"
is situated on the outskirts of town. Follow the signs from the
highway.
